| Halitosis is not a disease; it is an alteration of breath odor. According to recent researches, over 40 percent of the Brazilian population is affected by chronic halitosis.
Halitosis, or an alteration of breath odor, may bring unweloomed changes into a patient life:
Behavior changes: when halitosis sufferers become aware of their problem, they begin to feel insecure when coming close to other people, thus becoming withdrawn and often behaving coldly in their social contacts.
Social restriction: some halitosis sufferers are not aware of their bad breath, which is often caused by olfactory fatigue, a condition that can affect all of us. Sufferers may be discriminated in their social group in situations such as: Business or academic meetings, where colleagues avoid sitting next to them;
When presenting ideas, their listeners may feel so displeased with their bad breath that they end up not concentrating on the ideas being shared;
Failing to be indicated to represent the institution or group where they may have been active because their halitosis has become an “aggression” to listeners, thus putting the advancement of projects, ideas or sales at risk.
Their partners begin to avoid being kissed or having closer contacts, setting room for an even more distant relacionship.
